These plates are also nice for delivering plates of goodies to friends. The friend keeps the plate and uses it to pass treats to someone else, or hangs onto it just to have it around the house.
If you don't have a Beverly's in your area, glass dessert plates can also be found at Cost Plus and the Dollar Tree. I wasn't aware of this fact until after driving 40 minutes one way to Beverly's. hahaha
Fat quarters can be found just about anywhere material is sold, or you can tap into fabric scraps or recycle an old dress or something. If you go with fat quarters, you will be able to make a few of these plates from just one, so it's a super affordable project.
To start, wash and dry the fabric on hot and high heat to remove sizing and to shrink it. Press fabric.
Lay the plate face down on the wrong side of the fabric. Use a pencil, and trace around the plate to make a pattern. Cut fabric along your pencil line.
Using a sponge brush, apply a thick layer of Mod Podge to the back of the plate, then lay your fabric --right side down --on the plate, and smooth, smooth, smooth, to remove any bubbles or creases.
Apply more Mod Podge and allow to dry.
Apply several coats of Mod Podge, allowing each coat to dry between applications. The back of the plate will feel rough no matter how many coats of Mod Podge you apply, so just put on a few coats and call it done.
When all layers of Mod Podge are completely dry, use a file and scrape away the rough edges of the fabric to blend them into the side of the plate.
This one is the one we'll use for Santa. The others will be friendship plates.
Aren't they cute? Super easy, and a nifty way to get rid of a few large scraps of fabric, if you have any cluttering up your craft room.
Just in case it needs mentioning---these are not dishwasher safe. The surface of the plate can be spot cleaned with a hot, soapy sponge and rinsed, then towel dried. Using several coats of Mod Podge will help seal the fabric, or you can splurge on a $9 bottle of Liquid Laminate, which will help the fabric feel a bit more smooth, but the plates still won't be dishwasher safe.
Happy crafting!
